What we learned from Hurricane Ian

When Ian made landfall in September 2022 — eyewall crossing directly over Cape Coral and Fort Myers Beach with 150 mph winds — ShutterUp customers across Southwest Florida saw firsthand which window protection actually works. The data from that storm reshaped how we recommend hurricane-rated systems for Florida homes.

Storm panels saved openings — but only when they were installed correctly

Homes with properly installed impact-rated exterior shutters (accordion or roll-down) generally kept their openings intact. Homes with storm panels that hadn't been deployed before the storm — because owners couldn't reach all openings in time, or because the panels had been stored without ever being test-fitted — frequently lost the unprotected windows.

Motorized exterior screens proved their value

Customers with motorized hurricane-rated exterior screens deployed them in minutes from a single switch. After the storm, they retracted the screens and went back to using their lanais and patios normally. The combination of daily UV protection and rapid hurricane deployment made motorized screens the most-installed product in our post-Ian rebuild work.

Insurance carriers tightened requirements

In the year following Ian, most Florida insurance carriers raised the bar for verified impact-rated openings. Homes without TAS-201/202 verified protection saw dramatic premium increases or non-renewal. Homes with documented protection saw premium discounts of 15-30%.

Replacement and rebuild work

ShutterUp installed thousands of replacement plantation shutters and exterior screens across Cape Coral, Fort Myers, Bonita Springs, and Naples in the months after Ian. We learned which products held up — and which didn't — and our spec recommendations now reflect what survived an actual major hurricane.
