French doors with side glass and traditional door knobs need plantation shutters that mount to the door itself — not the surrounding wall. Done right, the shutters swing with the door, control privacy and light without removing or detaching, and don't interfere with the door's normal operation.
French door plantation shutters use a slim 1"-deep frame that mounts directly to the door. The panel(s) are sized to cover the glass exactly, with cutouts for door handles and lock mechanisms. The frame is engineered to clear the door's strike plate and weatherstripping. Without these details specified correctly, the shutter binds against the doorframe or interferes with the door latch.
French door shutter hinges have to clear the door knob, the lock strike, and the weatherstripping. We use specialty hinges with offset pivots — and during measurement, we photograph the door operation to make sure our spec accommodates everything. The result: shutters that close cleanly, swing freely, and never interfere with the door's normal use.
French door shutters take more daily stress than window shutters — every time the door opens or closes, the shutter takes the swing impact at the latch. Hardwood works but flexes under that stress over time. AlumaCore®'s aluminum-reinforced core handles it without panel flex, finish damage, or hinge wear. It's our default recommendation for French door applications.
